After producing seven artist albums, mixing three compilations, and releasing dozens of vinyls Yahel has established himself as one of the most popular and talented producers/DJs to have come from the Israeli Electronic scene.
Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
It started in the 80s with some of the great Electronic Sounds. I loved Depeche Mode, and the Pet Shop Boys. That got me into the sound. Then as the music progressed began to be drawn in by spinning records. Pump Up The Jam and tracks like that were the first things I started to spin when I was 14. Then I got a synth and the rest is history.
How do you describe your music to people?
My music is a combination of Club, and Psychedelic sounds. I started in the Psy/Goa scene but as I have grown so has my music. Definitely music for the clubs.
What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
Besides making music, I would have to say fishing and scuba diving. I fish all the time, it is a great way to relax. I also deep sea fish.
What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your business?
Well I have a team. My bother handles the finances, and my guy Jonny, handles all the PR. That lets me concentrate on my music which is the product we are all working to sell. Since people do not buy cds as they used to it is more difficult to make money. The way artists make their revenue is by traveling and playing gigs all over the world. From a creative standpoint the difficulty is challenging yourself to grow as an artist while keeping in tune with trends and sounds of the time.
When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
Ha, I don't know maybe a police officer. All I can remember ever wanting to do is DJ.
In what way has your community impacted your development as a musician?
The Electronic Music scene in Israel is very vibrant. I was influenced early on by the Goa sounds that people were bringing back with them from India. Then Astral Projection were one of the first groups to start putting their spin on the music. Every one in Israel has their style and their way of approaching the music and helping it grow. I am lucky to be part of that.
What other artists out there do you love?
As I said Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, LFO, Madonna, Paul Van Dyk, Infected Mushroom
What does your future hold?
I plan to travel and DJ for a few more years then maybe take a step back and work on my record label. We will see who knows what will be?
Beatport or Amazon. Be sure to check him out at www.djyahel.com and on MySpace as well.
