Muffin Top Designs

Cy of Muffin Top Designs creates quirky and original jewelry in sterling silver and semi-precious stones.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.

While i have always been an artsy person, it wasn't until early 2007 that i started beading and making jewelry after a period of examining my life and wondering what it all means. I'm mostly self-taught, but have taken a few classes in different techniques. I actually took a beginner's metalsmithing class instead of the prenatal classes i probably should have taken prior to my daughter's birth!

I have my BA in Visual Art and my Masters in Art Therapy - and would LOVE to take a jewelry making certificate sometime in the future!

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
hang out in my funky little house with my husband and baby daughter. i'm going to teach her how to fire up the torch and solder as soon as i can!

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your business?
having the time to do everything! i'd love to put all of my efforts into marketing and showing off my creations, but i also work full time (when i'm not on maternity leave). and now that i'm a new mom, there's even less time in the day. i have a couple of business classes under my belt, but haven't had the time to apply that knowledge to my etsy business.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
my stacking rings! i've always loved the look of them - my wedding set actually consists of three rings - and now i can't stop making them. i'd like to think that the lovely, rustic, organic shapes that my rings have set them apart from everyone else's.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
a truck driver or a fashion designer. not really along the same lines, but who says that you have to be conventional? i'm actually pretty happy with how i turned out!

What other shops or artists out there do you love?
there are so many fabulous shops out there - i love the fact that i'm a part of the handmade movement! step away from the big box stores!!!

i love... - the bright colours in their pieces perfectly reflect the personality of my friend, tia! plus her blog rocks! - my wallet, cosmetic bag, tissue cover and book tote are all hers. i'm a walking advertisement for her! [Check out the SCS interview with BizzieLizzie here - Ed.] - her collage sheets are perfectly curated. you can't get better than her! and - two men who aren't afraid to admit that they're crafty. 'nuff said!

i also belong to one of the best street teams on etsy - - some of the best shops are trade friendly!

What does your future hold?
fame, fortune and fun? i'm not sure what the future holds... but i'm hoping it will be exciting!
