Winter Lights Clothing & Accessories

Haylee of Winter Lights Clothing & Accessories focuses on clothes with an alternative edge targeted toward plus size chicks. She also carries photo necklaces and accessories like little bags and wrist warmers.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Haylee.
As a plus size teenager going through the inevitable identity crises I felt that clothes should be a reflection of who you are in the inside. Sadly, stores just didn't carry anything that accomplished that since 'plus size' and 'fashion' just did not mesh at the time. I'd always been somewhat crafty since childhood, and sewing eventually crossed my mind when I was 14. My mom supported me and bought me my first machine. From there on out I was in love. I started out by resizing and altering my existing clothing and eventually taught myself how to make my own clothes from scratch.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
Spending time with my wonderful fiancee, but that's not a very on-topic answer! I truly love quietly and intensely experiencing various forms of art and creativity, whether it's listening to music, watching a film, reading a book, gazing at artwork, or scouring Etsy for wonderful handmade items. I revel in the things people spend time, energy and passion creating.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your business?
Self-promotion has always been a huge challenge. I'm not an "out there" person who is comfortable talking about myself and what I do, but I am trying to find less abrasive methods to get my name out a little more. Time is certainly a challenge in and of itself, as there is never enough of it!

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
Probably the Vampira Corset Top...it's my new favorite design!

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
My all-consuming childhood desire was to flee home with just a backpack and guitar (I never actually learned to play, mind you!), live a granola hippie, "live off the land" lifestyle, and make money by busking on street corners which I would then use to travel from country to country, specifically to visit old castles and graveyards all across Europe. And...it's still what I want to do when I grow up!

What other shops or artists out there do you love?
Oh so many!

The artists on the Diyscene Etsy Team are not only a group of truly wonderful people and friends, they are hands-down awesome artists! I implore you to click this Etsy search link to see all their amazing shops.

Amanda has wonderful custom skirts which I've started "collecting," not to mention she is an absolute sweetheart.

Joanna is truly amazing to work with. She created a gorgeous custom bolero for me and I can't wait for my next purchases from her. I wish I could put her in my pocket.

Patricia is a wonderfully kooky artist who has some of the most crazy-awesome art prints ever.

Kelly is the most gifted artist! She made a custom watercolor painting which was a gift for my fiancee last Christmas, and it is something I still look at in utter awe every single day. I absolutely adore her work, as well as her wonderful personable demeanor.

I'm especially fond of Erica's adorable clothes, but she has really neat jewelry and hair accessories as well. She is one of the most sugary-sweetest girls around!

Rachelle has THE most lusciously gorgeous necklaces I've ever laid eyes on!

lovechildboudoir.etsy.com, Countessa.etsy.com, and emandsprout.etsy.com are also favorites!

What does your future hold?
When I first began selling clothes I was clueless with no idea what style I had or wanted. I did know I wasn't the biggest fan of what I was doing. Something clicked in me recently however, and I now have many new ideas which I feel represent my vision for my shop more accurately. By the time this blog is posted I'm hoping some of the new designs I'm working on will have been unveiled. I'm excited!

In time I hope to gain more success with my shop as well as the addition of an enjoyable day job I can do on the side.

Personally speaking, I look forward to spending the rest of my life with my fiancee and hopefully having lots of fun along the way. Yes, it sounds sickening, but it's true!
