Spiritualflyer

Father and son team Andy and Ken Stoffel of Spiritualflyer create hand-crafted custom double-sided silver coin rings. They feature rings made from most United States Silver Coins (coins minted prior to 1965, not including 1965) and some from other countries of the world. They also make rings from non-silver or clad coins (from 1965 to present). Currently they are starting a new line of Silver Dollar rings for people with large hands and ring sizes. They also make sets for couples, siblings, and even friendship rings.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Andy.
My father is the one who introduced me to double sided coin rings. He remembers from when he was a young boy his father teaching him how to make a ring out of a coin by tapping on the rim with a spoon until you finally formed a ring. This took a long time and when you were done you had a ring that was polished silver on the outside and had all the writing on the inside. This was neat but later on he saw a double sided ring and was really drawn to it because the writing and features were on both the outside of the band as well as the inside (heads and tails).

Awhile back he came to me and showed me some of these rings. We decided it would be worth discovering how to make and produce these rings. So we set out on our journey of discovery and today are making some of the finest examples of these hand crafted double sided silver coin rings you are going to find.

This business was created so that I could have a way to make money while I am attending bible college. My goal is to get through school and eventually work with youth who may not have some of the advantages that most of us enjoy; teaching them things like music and art and just being there for them.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
I have a few things that I truly enjoy, but if I had to pick just one it would have to be playing music. I believe that music is the greatest gift and I try to study all aspects of music I can. I long to be able to play several instruments but primarily play the drums and guitar.

My father is an avid treasure hunter (metal detector). However he goes well beyond the average beach or park hunter, spending countless hours researching a site and learning the history of the people who lived or worked in the area he is hunting, concentrating on the history of the site more than the finds.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your business?
For me it comes during the school year. Being in college at my age (37) is not easy, and I have tons of homework. So it is hard to find the time to get into a rhythm when it comes to making rings. But once I establish a schedule it works. I am constantly being stretched during those times, but I think it is good for people to be stretched; it is how we grow. Also if it wasn't for my father running the computer end of things; keeping up with orders and communicating with customers, I would not be able to do this.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
1900 Morgan Silver Dollar ring size 16.

I love the 1900 date, I call the rings I make with the dates (1900 or 2000) century rings. I wasn't around for the 1900 turn of the century, but I remember when we came to the year 2000. There was so much excitement and anxiety at the same time. I try to imagine how much different it was back in 1900, or how similar it may have been. For me that anxiety of casting off the old and familiar and the excitement of a new dawn is pretty special. So I really like the century rings.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
There are way too many things to list here. Don't we all have a multitude of dreams as we grow up? I can say that the one thing that I remember wanting to do is play music and be on stage. In one form or another that dream is still alive today and I am thankful to God for that. I may not be getting rich from it but I am living a happy life, because of it and that is what matters in the end.

What other shops or artists out there do you love?
I had one I really wanted to share here, but her website is not yet up and so it would be frustrating to all. She is a photographer who has battled and defeated Cancer and has an amazing eye for the good in all life. I will post a link on my website www.spiritualflyer.com as soon she gets hers up and running.

What does your future hold?
I would think that my future is an open book. The plot of my life is well established by now and so it is up to me to fill the pages with the details. I have a goal to reach, and I am on my way to doing just that. When I finish school I will be working closely with local churches and businesses to establish a youth center that concentrates on music, art, drama, and any other activity that could go along those lines. A place not only for kids to hang out and just be kids, but a place where they can grow and learn. The schools keep cutting these programs or raising the costs so that only kids from well-off families can afford to participate. I want to be able to provide all kids with the ability to follow their heart whatever direction it takes them in.
