JoannaGoanna creates handmade clothing, accessories and the occasional 'stuffed friend,' all made using vintage or 'up-cycled' fabric, buttons, and ribbons.
Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Joanna.
I have always enjoyed making clothing. Even as a kid I would embellish my Barbies' outfits - a rather fetching tissue creation springs to mind! My mother is a great sewer, so I have always gone to her when I can't figure out how to make something work. I started off making clothes for myself (and my sister and some friends), and have done so for years. Other people always told me that I should sell them, but I never really thought that I could make it work. Now that it's taken off and I am selling through local markets and on Etsy, I am so glad that I took the chance!
What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
I live with my husband in the hills outside the city, and every morning we get up early, when it's still dark, and go for a long walk through the misty mountain ash forests near our house. It's so beautiful and we often manage to catch a glimpse of a wallaby or two, and sometimes even a lyre bird. It's a great chance to clear your head before you begin your day and I couldn't live without it!
What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your business?
I have so many ideas that it's hard to find the time to get them all going. Especially when I get custom orders (which I love and make a priority) and the new items just have to wait. There's always so much to get done, that sometimes it can become overwhelming - but I always enjoy it!
What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
Definitely a Sunday Best Bolero Jacket, and most likely in a spotty fabric. I made this item based on a design that I had made for myself and that I couldn't bear to take off! When I have more time I will make a few more for myself.
When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
Many, many things! And I've already tried out a few along the way and no doubt things will change again.
What other shops or artists out there do you love?
My best friend is a wonderful landscape artist whose work I just think is amazing! She paints the Australian landscape in such an original and powerful way. I have two of her paintings in my house and I can't wait to gather more throughout the years.
Check out her work at nicoleparkins.com.au.
What does your future hold?
Hopefully more of the same. With perhaps the added blessing of being better organised. I will probably be moving overseas next year with my husband, so I can take my work with me and start up again somewhere new!
