Katie m. Berggren - Painting Intimate Moments of Motherhood

Artist Katie m. Berggren's current work stylizes intimate daily moments of life - grabs hold of the tactile and visible affection between mother and child.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Katie.
I have always loved art and have known for years that I’d be an artist. Growing up without TV channels, writing and drawing were how my siblings and I spent our time. In grade school I loved drawing portraits of my teachers and friends.

Before college I was a receptionist for a styling salon, and on quiet days I would spend my time at the desk drawing the clients who were waiting to get their hair done. This actually grew into a portrait business with a salon client being my first customer!

In college I began as a color pencil artist due to the detail that colored pencils could provide. I loved experimenting with line and composition. Then at some point it hit me that my art was not as fulfilling as it could be. I wanted to capture emotion and sparkle with less structure.

When painting a mural on my son's wall one day, it hit me that painting was what I needed to go back to! I started right away and haven't stopped since.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
There are three, they go hand in hand: be with my family, paint, and listen to music.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
Balancing time with the family and taking care of the children, giving them what they need on a day in and day out basis while finding the time to promote the work, create the work, hang shows, and communicate with collectors.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
I would prefer a small collection of 8x8 paintings. They look lovely hanging in a grouping with their similar earthy tones and motherhood themes!

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
An artist, a mother, a teacher and a writer. I guess I'm all four! Art and writing sustain me outside of family life, and how can you be a mother without being a teacher?

What other shops or artists out there do you love?
Maggie Blanchett
A Cagey Bee
Amy Giacomelli

What does your future hold?
Ideally, I'd like to support my family with my art - doing what I love while giving my husband the freedom to do what he loves - while we both build a beautiful life and world for our two little boys - who we both love immensely.
