Wood Mosaics

Robin and Kathy Tucker from Wood Mosaics specialize in old fashioned thick wood inlay pieces that are truly amazing. Mr. Tucker kindly granted us an interview recently.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
I can remember setting by a little table that my Great Grandfather had made which had a lot of little pieces glued on the top. It was up at my Grandmas house, where she lived with her 3 sisters. That is what planted the seed of making things using little pieces. Dad made a little box and covered it with little pieces in his younger days. After I got going on my Wood Mosaics, he would say, “My Grand Father made a couple little tables for casket stands, I made a little box using little pieces and Robin came along and ran it into the ground.”

The first thing I actually made was a cedar chest for my daughter that I put the little pieces on. Then I went on from there developing my work over the next 6 years.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
Take care of the different animals and birds on the small farm we have here.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
The cold in the winter and the heat in the summer.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
I like the Tumbling Block Pattern that I have on items from a Pattern Weight up to a Table. A Small Tumbling Block Lazy Susan would probably sum it up nicely.

I like how the design goes over the edge and as you turn it you will get a different look to it as in this video

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
A grown-up, I was tired of being a kid. As far as what I thought I would do? I don’t have the foggiest idea.

What other shops out there do you love?
These are some nice people and shops:

UniqueDesigns39 has some beautiful jewelry

Blind Spot Jewellery has pendants and rings among other things that work as a lamp or Wick.;

glassgypsy makes Glass beads

And here are some others:
Allegro Arts

What does your future hold?
We have been looking for and trying to plan for the coming (planned) second great depression that we are getting into now. I just hope that with Yahweh’s help we can get through it ok.

Visit Wood Mosaics for boxes, tables, game boards and more. You can also visit their Flickr Stream or MySpace as well as read more about them in their Featured Seller interview and Storque article on Etsy. Be sure to check out the video below. Pretty fascinating stuff!
