Coley Kennedy, the lead singer of Chicago-based Welcome To Ashley, stopped by to share with us a bit about himself and the band. Welcome To Ashley, which has been described as "The Smiths meets The Clash," was named among the years Best Bands of 2008 by Q101 FM in Chicago.
Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Coley.
Listening to my dad's records. The Stones, The Turtles, The Grass Roots, The Lovin' Spoonful.
What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
my favorite things - Riding my motorcycle, drinking in a bar with a good jukebox, being on the lake.
What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your business?
dealing with booking agents.
When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
funny, i never thought about being anything specific when i grew up. i guess it's because when i was a kid, i never thought about growing up. It seemed impossible.
my heroes, however, those i looked up to were rock and roll singers. as long as i can remember, i loved Rod Stewart, Elvis Presley, and Mick Jagger.
In what way has your community impacted your development as a musician?
Chicago winters are tough. I get pretty depressed come February. so, of course my lyrics reflect this. and then come spring, there seems to be a glimmer of hope in the words i write. also, there's the traffic, the noise, the gangs, the bars, the girls, the alleys. City life. i could go on forever.
What other artists out there do you love?
The Smiths, The Stones, The Clash
What does your future hold?
if i'm lucky...
"a long life and a merry one. a pretty girl and an honest one. a cold pint and another one!"
Welcome To Ashley at one of their upcoming shows and head on over to amazon to download their EP Absent Man.
