The Hat Junkie

Anna Shoub of The Hat Junkie creates whimsical and elegant hats for women made from polar fleece, felt and straw. The flowers on many of her hats are made from one-of-a-kind vintage handkerchiefs!

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Anna.
I was passionate about hats before I began making them. I would always buy myself a hat on special occasions or when I needed a little cheering up. One day I walked into this incredible hat shop in Toronto. The woman made all the hats. She had two sewing machines in the back. One for herself and one for her assistant. It was like I walked into a dream. Up until that moment I had never considered that someone actually makes the hats. She was very kind and patiently explained to me what I would need to do to become a milliner. After that day I was a woman with a mission. I got my neighbour to teach me how to sew and the rest is history.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
Dance and make hats. Sorry there has to be two.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
Balancing business with taking care of my five year old son.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
I am particularly fond of my new hanky hats.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be an actress. I was a dancer, though, so I did get to act and I think making hats fills that same need for theatricality.

What other shops or artists out there do you love?

What does your future hold?
I am hoping my future holds a beautiful little shop here in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia where I can fill all my wholesale orders and make all the one of a kind creations my heart desires. Oh yes, and hopefully lots of money with time off to enjoy my family.
