Seattle artist Tere Ryder of Birdandmoonstudio creates many fine art/ fine craft items, including mixed media bird sculptures, miniature oil and acrylic paintings, and fine art prints of some of her larger acrylic and collage works. Her latest additions have been fine art steampunk necklaces and pendants which are made from antique pocket watches, hardware, clock parts, vintage jewelry, and other little bits.

She and I also share the same birthday, which is always exciting.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Tere.
I have always constructed and created things since I was little. I cannot remember a time in my life that I did not create my own things. My family, being aware of this, always made sure I had anything and everything I needed to make art. At a very early age my artwork was hanging all over our house. Whenever I got presents for birthdays, Christmas, etc, it was ALWAYS art supplies. Anything and everything I needed to make things. My dad was a merchant marine and traveled the world and always brought me back portfolios of famous artworks from many museums around the world. I was always looking and looking at the plates in the portfolios, even when I was quite young. I also attended art school as a young girl. In my family, there was never a question about me being an artist, and I was totally supported in anything I did with my art.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
My favorite thing to do in the whole wide world has ALWAYS been to create something out of nothing. Something new from deep inside of me. Something that never existed before

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
Doing all that LEFT BRAIN stuff. ALWAYS, THAT!!! is a problem.
