the banyan tree

Katherine Getta of the banyan tree offers original art, screen printed on 100% cotton t-shirts.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, katherine.
I am a self-taught silkscreen artist, an illustrator and designer. I have been designing and screenprinting for a long time—about 30 years! I started by selling my t-shirts at Grateful Dead concerts in the late 70's, early 80s and it eventually grew into opening a specialty store in Eugene, Oregon, "the Banyan Tree," selling my exclusive, locally made, hand dyed clothing and t-shirt designs.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
Travel to other countries.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
I am a full time, professional graphic designer, which I absolutely love. Since the t-shirt screen printing is not a full time gig, I have a hard time finding time to promote my shop. I would like it to be a bigger part of my work, so I will need to find that time. I am working on a catalog of my designs. That is going a bit slower than I would like. But little, by little, I am getting it done.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
Mad Hatter t-shirt.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
A movie star.

What other shops or artists out there do you love?
There are so many unique artists and items on Etsy. Here are a few of my favorites:

What does your future hold?
I want to add more and more designs to my collection. Definitely more Lewis Carroll characters. I have a list of about 20 ideas in folders on my computer of t-shirt designs I want to make.
