What is the story behind your shop name, Jessica?
I started my line because of my children, so I wanted the name to reflect them in some way.
My two oldest children are 12 months apart and have this super close relationship. When my oldest was two, they started creating and speaking their own little language.
Kunkle was one of their words. They used to tell me you could buy anything from the Kunklestore-bread, toilet paper, even mermaids. It was a magical store that had anything we could ever dream of. If we ran out of something, the kids told us to go to the Kunklestore.....So became Kunklebaby.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
Kunklebaby was created after I had children. I found it hard to find stylish, hip items for both baby and mother. I wanted vibrant, fun, unique and elegant. Just because I had children didn't mean I was no longer stylish. I wanted to stand out and started creating my baby line then.

I am also a painter, and found it hard to squeeze in time to paint with young children[and grabby hands-lol]. Kunklebaby has allowed me to remain creative, while not having the time to devote to painting.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
I love reading! My favorite place to read is outside in the late Spring/early Summer. The air has a clean, fresh scent, birds are singing, the sun is shining high in the sky. The trees are waking up from the long winter. The explosion of color after the bland, gloomy winter is wonderful. It just makes me feel happy, hopeful and at peace.

Often I will find myself getting lost in the book, I am so relaxed.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
Time! I love what I am doing, but often find myself working until 2-3am. I have three young children at home with me. I need to balance their needs, and just fun creative play with working. Luckliy, I am a night owl and do my best work after most people have gone to bed.

The second challenge would be wanting to keep everything I have made. As soon as my kids see a new item I have made, they say "Ohh, is that for me? I l-o-v-e it!". My daughter is the worst!

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
My favorite item right now is this shirt. The fabric is so soft and lovely. Lightweight, breezy and perfect for the warmer months that are ahead. I want to make one in my size.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
An artist. There was never any other option for me! My first memories are of painting and drawing. I used to fill boxes and boxes of completed art that I could not bear to get rid of!

I studied painting/fine art at the Columbus College of Art & Design and Ohio State University, before starting a family and Kunklebaby. I am hoping to incorporate my artwork into my shop in the next year or two.

What other shops or artists out there do you love?

What does your future hold?
Many days of laughter and smiles. I am really enjoying watching my children grow up. Everyday they grow and learn so much! They are my inspiration!

I look forward to getting back to my painting roots and working more in that direction as the kids grow. They are little artists themselves and I am thrilled to now be painting besides them!
