British Cream Tea

Ouissi of British Cream Tea creates hand-sewn little treats that are perfect for everlasting adult tea parties, great for keeping your pins in order, make beautiful bookshelf ornaments, are fabulous as party favours, bring back memories of anyone with a British childhood, and look beautiful strung on ribbon as holiday decorations. They look equally great just piled in a beautiful bowl in your kitchen, and all pieces are made from 100% recycled felt.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Ouissi.
I started sewing my felt foods when my son was old enough for me to think about work again and I found that I needed a new challenge. So I cut a Jammie Dodger out of felt, followed a picture in my mind and sewed in together. It all went from there...

I have always sewed though, my Aunt is a designer and makes the most wonderful wedding dresses. She taught us all to sew and let us loose in her bags of scrap fabric and trimmings!

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
Spend time playing with my baby, making him laugh, reading books with him and trying to see the world through his eyes.

I also love spending time with my family. Laughing and chatting over wine with my mum and sister, curling up in front of films and sitting quietly watching our son sleep with my partner and discussing life and everything with my 9 year old nephew.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
Hand sewing all my pieces. During a busy time I can often be found working through the night! I do not have a short cut.

I am lucky though as my family is one of small businesses and has a lot of knowledge. I grew up in this environment. I have a business adviser, a marketing expert, a copy writer and a bookkeeper within my immediate family. That does help a lot.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
My Boiled Egg and Toast Soldiers...just making it makes me smile. I do have a chocolate, Creme Egg version for Easter too that I wouldn't mind receiving

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
I always had so many plans as a child. I wanted to be so many things...a ballet dancer, lawyer, opera singer, mother, astronaut...

I don't even think I had just one job in mind. I certainly never had a vocation. That is probably shown in the number of degrees I have.

I would never have dreamed I would have become a felt confectioner though!

What other shops or artists out there do you love?
I love Star of the East's Etsy shop especially their sea urchin pieces and jewellery which reminds me of family summers spent in the Greek Islands.

Michelle Caplan's shop was how I discovered Etsy years ago and I still love her work.

I have been wanting to buy a set of puppets from Orange Moon Toys for a long time. They are so fabulously detailed.

Lastly, I love Olive's cushions. I would love a set for our bed

What does your future hold?
I would love to grow my little business, sew all the ideas I have in my head and see them on the shelves of shops and boutiques. I love what I do and I love to see people buying and enjoying my pieces.
