Topsy Turvy Design

Kim Dye of Topsy Turvy Design creates costume Accessories for Stage, Film & Play. Kim popped by to tell us more about her delightful shop.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
I grew up in a household of crafty folk. I was constantly at home making stuff.... Psychotic paper mache masks, whacky puppets, poorly sewn clothes, needlepoint & latchhook pillows. This is probably why I didn't have a boyfriend until I was in college!
In 2001, I received a BA in theatrical design. During an internship, I was exposed to the art of millinery & fell head over heels with the craft...

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
Roadtrips! I looooove a good roadtrip.
I just adore roadside diners, kitschy attractions, hotel/motels, antique & curiosty shops.
It's kinda ironic, because I don't drive...My hubby & BFF humor me greatly...

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
Keeping on top of orders.
Topsy Turvy Design is a business of 3 - Myself, my RAD intern Katie & occassional help from my AWESOME Mom.
It gets a little ((cuckoo crazy)) at times.
I am also profoundly paperwork challenged.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
I would looooove to receive my Ringleader Hattie. GAWD I love this hat. If this hat was a boy, I would divorce my hubby & marry it.
It is odd, but I don't "own" a single one of my hatties...

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
When I was wee, I thought I would be a farmer, veterinarian or animal trainer.
As a teen, I thought I would be an archeologist or globe trekker.
As an adult I knew I would someday be a costume artisan - DING DING DING

What other shops out there do you love?
I ADORE the following...

What does your future hold?
-Hats Hats & more Hats.
-2 Offspring (Luna & Park) that I will dress in vintage clothes & yes - hats - if they let me.
-1 Corgi who we will name Corgato or Corgus. Our cat, Boudicca will despise Corgato at first, but then grown to love him...
-1 laundry-mat-yellow cottage with a front porch & a veggie garden
