LemonBall

LEMON BALL™ baseballs are classic vintage style baseballs based on the original lemon peel style "base ball" from the early 19th Century. Revitalizing a design that has faded into obscurity, LEMON BALL™ baseballs are hand stitched to create an exceptionally beautiful ball.

Designed and made by Paul Cunningham, a Cooperstown, NY native with broad baseball experience, LEMON BALL™ baseballs are made in America with artisanal quality.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Paul.

I was born on the first day of Spring Training in Cooperstown, NY.
By the time I was eight years old, I knew that I was a baseball savant.
Through the years I've always been involved with baseball in one form or another. First as a player (which extended through my college years) then as a researcher, and later as the long time Photo Editor for Major League Baseball. Through it all, I've always had a passion for craftsmanship. I decided to combine my love of baseball with my passion to create and LEMON BALL™ baseballs were born.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
First favorite thing to do: Throw a baseball; throw it hard and with precision, over and over until my arm hurts.

Second favorite: Hit a baseball on the sweet spot of a wooden bat, over and over until my hands start to blister.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
My Etsy shop is a labor of love and I'm grateful to the terrific folks at Etsy who have created such a wonderful tool. They have enabled me to be successful. But, with success comes accounting, which I find mind numbingly boring. So, my biggest challenge is to stay focused on the business side of things when I would rather create.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
I love all my creations, but I don't need to poses them. I create to share with others. It is my hope that people will get as much joy from receiving a LEMON BALL™ baseball as I get from making them.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
I was pretty sure that I was going to be the Yankee's center fielder. Didn't happen. I still hold out hope that some Major League Team will bring me on as an aging, but crafty knuckleballer.

What other shops out there do you love?
Hardwick Leather Goods makes really cool things that have a warm aura.

Kukurbita makes very appealing stuff.

Flamestitch is seriously talented.

425 Square Foot Art
makes stuff that is different, funny and with a ton of detail. Clearly talented.

What does your future hold?
I am focusing lots of positive energy on my craft in the hope that it will bring some good vibes to the world of baseball, which has been beset by most of the seven deadly sins.
