J2 Jewelry

Jenna of J2 Jewelry creates "rad jewelry for rad people." Most of her handmade items are either one of a kind or made to order by Jenna and her husband, who occasionally lends a hand.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, Jenna.

It began with a junk drawer. My mom had this great collection of really weird odds and ends. Among the flotsam of thread bobbins and fabric swatches were broken necklaces, parts of puppets, prisms, tiny plastic people, paper origami, treasures from christmas crackers, tortoise hair combs, opera glasses, and yards of ribbon. I was around six and would spend entire afternoons sitting on the floor of my Mom's sewing nook arranging and rearranging these treasures, but what I really loved were the old pressed glass beads. I got a job at a bead store when I was 17 and the obsession just compounded from there.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
I love to read. There have been times when I've ignored just about everything going on around me because I'm at a critical point in a novel. Even if I've read it before I still hold my breath. There's nothing that can compare with a really good book, a strong cup of tea, a cool afternoon and a few cookies (for good measure).

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
Finding time to actually make new jewelry. I've taken to keeping a design book, which is somewhat laughable as I cannot draw a straight line without a ruler. Mostly it's full of keywords which will then trigger the image I've set in my mind of how I want a piece to turn out.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
My larger honeycomb necklace. I am thoroughly obsessed with bees right now.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
I never wanted to be just one thing when I was growing up. I wanted to be a fireman/policewoman/artist/violinist/beekeeper/traveler/doctor/vet/sailor. I've always wanted to make things, though.

What other shops out there do you love?
blancucha , irregularexpressions, KMStitchery, orangemoontoys, elsita, adorapop, and electricboogaloo

What does your future hold?
Joy, love, triumph, humor, sorrow, thoughtlessness, mindfulness, work, play, naps, books, tea, haircuts, jewelry, shoes, kids, card games, trips to Maine, giggling, crying, wonder, stubbed toes, dogs, lemon meringue pie, cold mornings, and infinite possibility.
