Cassowary Jewelry

Cassowary Jewelry offers an electric mix of styles, materials, and inspirations for those who like variety in their jewelry. Memphis-based jewelry artist Shannon sat down with us to tell us a bit more about herself and Cassowary Jewelry.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
I found an old jewelry kit at TJ Maxx or Marshalls, and after fiddling around with the beads, I decided to try some more beading, and then it just spiraled on from there.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
I don't really have a favorite. I love listening to NPR, playing video games, and dozing. I want to say that I have some interesting hobbies, like water skiing or traveling to exotic locales, but I'm afraid of deep water, and don't travel well.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
Taking pictures. Sometimes the wind blows my jewelry off of the deck. Once the wind blew so hard that a tile hit me in the head. Also, once it rained on me. However, natural light is how my jewelry looks best, and summer is coming.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
Earrings. I collect them, although I don't wear them. This is why I have so many earrings in my shop.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
I thought I was going to be a writer. I write now, but more in keeping with my short attention span. I could never be a novelist.

What other shops out there do you love?
These medicine bags

Recycled Records

Buy my crap

Nightmare Anthology

RJ Blacksmith

What does your future hold?
It holds a lot more crafting and much fun and laughter.
