alt_cross_stitch at is "an unapologetic cross stitch orgy." Indeed. As someone who likes to cross stitch and isn't dedicated enough to make my own patterns, I find most commercially-available patterns to be...well...boring. Not so at alt_cross_stitch! spamberly's creations are a delightful deviation from all of the teddy bear and unicorn samplers out there.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft, spamberly.
i think i was born with a needle in my hand. oh, how painful for my mother. she owned a quilt store on the first floor of our house. i would spend hours fingering the notions around me. thread, ribbon, fabric. mom taught quilt classes at night. it was all glue guns and woven potholders until a student teacher introduced my class to cross stitch. i made one big X and was hooked. from there, i ravenously completed every cross stitch kit i could buy.

those kits really bored the hell out of me after awhile. none of them allowed me to express my teenage angst. so i set out in a new direction, with graph paper and pencil, to create designs i actually wanted to stitch - designs that spoke louder than butterflies and bunnies.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
ROAD TRIPS! no matter where or when or for how long. a good road trip always leads back to a centering, calming place inside of me. i really enjoy discovering new places and people on this big sphere. all roads lead to other roads.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
i think my biggest challenge is staying true to myself. i get "you should do a [insert their idea here] cross stitch!" all the time from friends and family, and even other etsy users. i always appreciate the ideas, but rarely give them a second thought. my work is not about what will sell or what's currently popular. it's about my own creative process. that might sound pretentious. i kind of don't care.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
this little gem just makes me giggle. lamewad is one of my favorite words. i think most people who know me would know that this goes straight to my funny bone.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
i was pretty certain i wanted to be a chiropractor, but that dream died when i realized how much i hated touching people. i also wanted to be Neneh Cherry. i was convinced i'd be the first white female rapper ever.

What other shops out there do you love? makes incredible art. i have several pieces and want everything she makes. is also a fave. kickass.

and of course cuz who doesn't need You Park Like Shit car clings.

What does your future hold?
i'm very excited to announce that i'll be launching new DIY cross stitch kits in the coming weeks. kits will come in slammin' black zipper pouches, and include all the necessary bits in order for you to make your very own "the dude abides" or "breasts" cross stitch.
