Under The Root and Quarks

Under The Root is hand-structuring undergarments and findlings for ladies and gentleman with a burlesque state of mind. Their motto is "Living consciously with our sensuality."

Quarks is a place where clothing and accessories are "made for the space people out there. A tiny particle adventure, for the body."

Jennifer M. Brown uses sustainable, recycled, vintage textiles as a source for the raw materials in both shops, and she sauntered by for a little interview with us today.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
My beginnings with sewing was for the Theater in High School. It was there that I had my hands dirty in the textiles and designs for different bodies. I am a Dancer and continually enthralled that I could then take this knowledge and apply it to Costumes for the whimsical. My true love and hobby was and will always be finding superior textiles from thrift stores, estate sales, and travels. As the years moved forward, I found myself drawn to undergarments. I began designing them roughly ten years ago and continue to challenge myself with just the right fit and texture.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
I enjoy many simple things and somehow they become complex, that is what keeps me intrigued with life. Reading, writing, bicycling, constructing art, and communicating are just a smidgen of the sensibilities throughout me. Oh yes, and I sincerely enjoy all things water, fire, earth, and air.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
My challenges, right now, include maintaining a whisper of the inner critic instead of a yell, photographs which display the essence of the designs, and financial drawbacks.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
All the Structures are taken from pieces of my desires. If I had to choose my top three:

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
Did I grow up? Seriously, I find reality in a state of mind. When the going gets a little too much, the boots come on and the birds start flying.

What other shops out there do you love?
There are so many valuable Artisans out there and I raise my glass to each and every one of them. I would, however, love to draw attention to a couple.

What does your future hold?
My future may contain eternity, lightness/darkness of being, and a galaxy made of stars. In other words, I desire wishes, different realities, and the compassion to work through sadness.

Participants answer the trivia question listed by sending a comment to the Post at the Blog, then she takes all the correct responses, throws them in a Hat, and using the Cunningham Technique by pulling out the Chance Winner! The Winner receives their choice in Size and Color of that Design. Sounds like fun to me! Let's go play!
