Mistflower Studio

Mistflower Studio offers a selection of one-of-a-kind fine art mosaics, mosaic pendants, acrylic paintings, mixed media wall art, as well as pocket mirrors, magnets, and pinback buttons featuring photographs of mosaics. Artist Valerie Fuqua sat down with us for a little chat.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
I sustained a traumatic brain injury in a multiple car accident "thanks" to a drunk driver. I had to re-learn how to do many things and I started putting together children's jigsaw puzzles as a challenge. As I recovered, the puzzles increased in difficulty. I had been an artist for most of my life up until the accident, so when I started feeling well enough to create again, I decided to try making a mosaic because it was like a jigsaw puzzle. That's how it all began.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
I love snuggling with my three dogs and my husband. We all get up on the king size bed and spend a little quiet time together.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
My biggest challenge right now is finding the time to make new art for my store. I show my work in galleries and boutiques and it's a constant juggling act to give venues new art and then keep some for my Etsy store.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
Without a doubt it would be my African mask, "Bob, Why the Long Face?" I have a picture of him on my business cards and the homepage on my website. I always get attached to any mosaic that has a face, but "Bob" has a special hold on me.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
From the time I was 5YO I told everyone I was going to be an interior designer. After taking some classes I realized I'd prefer to have more creative freedom and have made interior design a hobby instead of a career.

What other shops out there do you love?
There are so many talented people on Etsy. It's hard to choose, but here are a few of my favorites:

JILLreDESIGNS.etsy.com Modern jewelry I adore!

ImagineStudio.etsy.com Fantastic digital art!

fancypicnic.etsy.com Incredible textile jewelry & accessories

Yoola.etsy.com Queen of the Pomegranates and so much more!

OnSlenderThreads.etsy.com Gorgeous handknit creations!

What does your future hold?
My art will continue to evolve. I have a new series that I've just begun and will be unveiling in the late summer. I see myself creating larger, more sculptural pieces and I have tons of ideas for mixed media work. I also have plans to explore my love of photography.

Each year I set goals for myself as an artist, both short term and long term. It's important to me to have something to look forward to and to work towards.
