Metal Riot - Handwrought Jewelry

MetalRiot features hand-fabricated mixed metal jewelry by Thomasin Durgin. Offering Limited edition and one of a kind pieces made from recycled sterling silver, copper, and brass using traditional silversmithing techniques such as sawing, piercing, etching, soldering, and forging.

We were delighted to have Thomasin agree to an interview with us.

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
I have an MFA in fiber art, and I worked in that medium for many years. I've always been attracted to modern design, and I have a large collection of vintage modernist silver jewelry. It was a natural progression for me to begin experimenting with metal, as I'd been admiring and wearing the work of others. I first learned cold joining techniques on my own, and eventually took a short metalsmithing class.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
I'm really into acid-etching metal at the moment, particularly fine photo details.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
I'm new to etsy, I opened my shop the second week of December 2008, so I haven't had much time to find out what the challenges are. Up until this point I've sold at private trunk shows and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art Gift Shop. However, I have been selling vintage mod jewelry for three years on my web site Mod Baubles, the biggest challenge with that has been setting aside the time to photograph and post new inventory, which includes programming the shopping cart.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
There is a mixed metals necklace that will be hard to part with, it's all I can do not to wear it. Receiving it as a gift would be the best of two worlds

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
An artist.

What other shops out there do you love?
This is a short list, I recommend that your readers check out my favorites on etsy to see many more wonderful artisans:

Quercus Silver - Contemporary silver and resin jewelery

Azure Grackle - Original Art Prints

Element Clay Studio, Ceramics by Heather Knight

ArtJewel Designs - The Sculptural Idea in Jewelry

Bridgman Pottery - Great Pottery (I own a bunch)

Fiaz Co - Limited Edition Clutches and Handbags

Experimetal - Contemporary Jewelry

Lupin Handmade - handmade brooches, fun disguises and other felt treats

What does your future hold?
I am taking an enameling class this January and am looking forward to incorporating color into my work that way. I would like to learn more advanced forging techniques, perhaps raising vessels. I haven't done any casting yet. And there is a pewtersmithing class I'm thinking about for the fall.
