The Art of Jennifer Lommers

Jennifer Lommers creates unique whimsical art from her home in the Northwest United States. You can find these lovely pieces on offer in her Etsy store. You can find an interview with the lovely artist right here!

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
I have painted my entire life. Friends of my parents still have some of my mallard duck watercolors from when I was in middle school. I also have (and treasure) my first horse painting that I made when I was in grade school with the help of an artist at a circus (of all places)! Twice along the way I became distracted with math, computers and science, but when in college (thanks to my Freshman roommate) I found my way into art again. The second time I lost my way took me a bit longer to get back (thanks to an early mid-life crises), but I'm happily back at my artwork again full time.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
I love to hike. I feel alive in the outdoors hearing the birds sing and smelling the fresh air. My second career choice would have been a park ranger.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
I find that I get lost in the computer (partly because I spent 10+ years of my life working in computers) and have to remind myself to focus on my weekly goals which don't always include being on Etsy! Also, with selling online I find it's harder to get that immediate gratification from someone buying your art. There is always this lingering worry about whether they will love it (the insecure artist thing). Going to art shows is more reaffirming for that.

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
I always love coffee art as a gift. Going to coffee shops and reading the paper or doing some drawing is always a great bit of me-time. I also love to meet at coffee shops with friends or family and enjoying together time too. I have a lot of good memories associated with coffee.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
A marine biologist! I never had any doubt. Life is full of surprises.

What other shops out there do you love?

What does your future hold?
A post 40 Marathon! I'm hoping to work up to doing another marathon this year (I've done 2 in my life plus several half marathons, but haven't done one in about 5 years). When I run more I find I have more energy, so I'm hoping that this will benefit my art as well and allow me to paint more with even more whimsical fun! Long term... I'm looking forward to more traveling. On our sites: Australia, Greece, Ireland and Hawaii (again).
