Fat Crow Press

Fat Crow Press features original hand-pulled prints, by Julie Sola. She is currently featuring her 6x6" monoprint "tiles." I am always happy to interview artists from my own hometown, so I was delighted when she agreed to let me pick her brain!

Tell me about how you originally got into your craft.
I am a self taught artist. I started crafting things with my Grandma when I was a little girl, she was always crocheting, sewing and on special occasions sculpting little animals with clay. I credit her with my love of all things handmade. I first discovered printmaking while on a trip through Texas, a friend was printing cards from a wood block she had carved. It all clicked then, I realized that I could create in this medium with just a block of linoleum, a few carving tools, ink, paper and a wooden spoon! I was on my way!

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole wide world?
My favorite thing to do is print. I can't wait to get into the studio and work. I have a vandercook proofing press that I am restoring and look forward to the day that it is ready to use. When I am not printing I love to go thrift shopping, that is relaxing to me.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to running your shop?
I just started my shop so I have a few challenges with computer skills, I had to have a crash course in scanning etc. I am very motivated to come up with more things to list and get the word out. Another big challenge is coming up with creative descriptions that do not sound hokey!

What item in your shop would you most like to receive as a gift if someone were shopping for you?
I would have to say a few tiles. Since they are small and you do not have to frame them it takes no effort to create a grouping on your wall.

When you were a kid, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
A veterinarian. All through junior high and high school I worked after school for veterinarians and I also took animal husbandry courses. I loved my work but realized I was not dedicated enough to be a doctor! Now I just create images of animals.

What other shops out there do you love?
I love so many shops I could not possibly list them all! You can see them on my favorites list. At the top of my list is: lemongrassstudio, I have always wanted to hook rugs. I also have to list krisblues, misnopalesart, yeehaw and sheridesthelion they are all amazing printmakers on etsy that I admire.

What does your future hold?
A new studio in my backyard where I can go whenever I feel the need to create. I am going to continue to create more things that make me happy, which will involve my three dimensional items that have been placed on the back burner for awhile. I will continue to do what I love everyday, which is design and print at Hatch Show Print, I could not have a better job! So my future is to keep on printing.
